Why you can’t stick to your goals.

As a trainer most of my clients come to me because they are wanting someone to keep them accountable to their fitness goals.  They need someone to remind them why they are there and what they have set out to do.  If you are trying to do this on your own it can be very difficult to do… Notice I said difficult, NOT impossible.  If you want something but having a hard time getting there, don’t worry because I have all the answers (well maybe)!

  1. You’re paying to much attention to the end result.  Lets say you want to lose 20 lbs but can’t get past the fact that you want to lose 20 lbs and keep focusing on that end number instead of what you should be doing to get to that -20.  Focus on it little by little.  Think about losing 20 lbs like you would think about hitting a golf ball.  If you buy a basket of 100 balls how well do you think you’ll hit the ball in front of you if you’re thinking about the other 99?  Probably not very well.  The same thing goes for your other goals, focus on the todays instead of the tomorrows.
  2. Keep your goal your priority.  You are going to have to make sacrifices along the way.  If you have to skip a party because you have to get up to go to the gym in the morning the so be it.  Sometimes it’s going to be painful and sometimes it will be a serious drag but at the end of the tunnel there is the light of achievement.  If you have to clear your to do list to make room for your goal then make it happen, if you have to delegate things to other people the do it.  The old saying is true “Where there is a will there is a way” so FIND THE WAY.
  3. You’re overestimating your abilities.  Now, don’t take that the wrong way, but if you walk into a gym and have never bench pressed before and you load up the bar with 300 pounds, it’s going to be a giant fail.  However if you walk into a gym take your spot under the bar and load it up until you figure out what the max weight is that you can lift right then, it gives you a good starting point to work up to being able to bench 300 lbs.  Start with what you know you can do and then push yourself further and further until you are strong enough to accomplish what you set out to do.
  4. Don’t pay attention to anyone else and their results.  I find myself doing this more than I should, I compare myself to everyone and it ends up making me feel like a failure because I seemingly don’t match up to that other person.  The fact of the matter is I am only seeing the end result, I didn’t see the hard times they went through to get to that point, I didn’t see the sacrifice, I didn’t see the pain, sweat and tears it took to get there.  In my head it was a walk in the park for that person to accomplish what they have, when in most cases that is definitely not the case.  So just keep in mind that you are not the only one struggling to get there, people who have gotten there before you had the same struggles you are having.

There are going to be times when it is really hard and you’ll feel like giving up, that’s almost a given that it will feel like that.  Just keep pushing, believe in yourself, and stay stronger than the temptation to give up.
